Perceived group discrimination and the integration paradox in stigmatized neighborhoods

Residents of “European Banlieues,” or stigmatized neighborhoods in urban peripheries across Europe, are frequent targets discrimination. Scholars have previously found evidence an “integration paradox,” where the most integrated people with foreign backgrounds perceive In this research note, we evaluate whether integration paradox extends to migrant-origin residents “Banlieues.” Using original two-wave panel survey those from two Sweden's deprived neighborhoods, which subsets likely group discrimination and perceived matters for their political incorporation. Our findings indicate presence these communities, greater acculturation is associated less more marginalization: native-born consistently than foreign-born ones report Moreover, perceptions not without consequence: reduces trust national institutions ordinary Swedes, a weaker Swedish identity. These highlight pockets diverse disadvantaged European welfare states, point detrimental consequences systematic exclusion.
